RIP Mario Monicelli

Mario Monicelli (May 15, 1915 – November 29, 2010) was an Italian director and screenwriter, one of the masters of the Commedia all'Italiana (Comedy Italian style).


Awards include the Silver Bear for Best Director for Padri e figli (1957), Caro Michele (1976), and Il Marchese del Grillo (1981); the Golden Lion for Grande guerra (1959); and the Career Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (1991). He was also the Oscar-nominated director of I Compagni and Casanova 70.


At the age of 95, Monicelli threw himself from a window of the San Giovanni hospital in Rome, where he was admitted a few days earlier for prostate cancer.
