RIP J.R. Minkel

c.m: Suicide


Rising-star science journalist J.R. Minkel passed away on January 24, 2011. Only 31 years-old, Minkel held a Master's Degree in Science and Environmental Reporting from New York University and a B.S. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University, where he dabbled in zebrafish genetics. J.R. was a talented writer who covered space, physics, cosmology, and technology for Scientific American, where he was a staff writer, Popular Science, New Scientist, LiveScience, IEEE Spectrum, and many other publications. Author of the Instant Egghead Guide: The Universe, he also blogged at his own site, "A Fistful of Science." J.R. had a knack for making complex science understandable by anyone, and his quest for knowledge, meaning, and humor shone through his writing.


Minkel is survived by mother, Michele Minkel; brothers, John Minkel & William Martin Minkel III; and sister, Wendy Sullivan.
