RIP Milton Levine

c.m: Natural causes

Milton Levine, the founder of Uncle Milton Industries Inc., died on Jan. 16 at age 97. Levine was best known for creating the Ant Farm, a plastic toy that was named one of the top 100 toys of the century by the Toy Industry Association.

Levine introduced the farm -- a green plastic case with whimsical decorative windmill and barn, and a clear plastic viewing area -- in 1956. According to Westlake Village-based Uncle Milton Industries, more than 20 million of the farms have been sold worldwide.

After returning from WW II, Levine read in the newspaper of the pending postwar baby boom, and in turn founded toy company Uncle Milton in 1946.

Levine is survived by Mauricette, his wife of 65 years; son Steven, daughters Harriet and Ellen; sisters Pearl Cossman and Ruth Shriber; and three grandchildren.
